The theme for Earth Day 2023 is “Invest in Our Planet.” And what better way to invest in Mother Nature but to give her a “check-up.” Just like a doctor taking a patient’s blood sample, we can sample water to assess the health of our planet. This year, that’s our investment. Earthology is conducting water sampling in southwest Florida around the Picayune Strand Restoration Project and Collier-Seminole State Park. We analyze for legacy toxins like DDT and other pesticides, and more typical parameters like metals and nutrients. Through these and other data we can identify the places where Mother Nature is doing well or where she needs some help. It’s not always easy. There’s lots of specialized equipment and know-how needed to collect and analyze the samples properly, not to mention the occasional hungry alligator to avoid. But we do our best because this is the only planet we all have, and it makes much more sense to invest in this one to keep it healthy rather than to treat it disrespectfully. Remember the old English proverb, “It is an ill bird that fouls its own nest.” Happy Earth Day 2023!
